Location of the band?

Were the soronprfbs supposed to be an American band that was playing gigs and maybe living in England? I assume they were in England in the beginning because Domhall Gleeson has the accent and later they drove through customs to get to Ireland. But then they were showing the band driving to Texas in their van just like that. I didn't understand the location sense of it all.

Still a very great film, one of my favorites of the year. Can't wait for the CD and blu ray to come out in the US.

I was curious what British seaside town they were in in the beginning. It's never explained how the mostly American (except the French guy) band came to be in England (if that's where they were) in the first place.

reply

Well, doesn't England provide refundable tax credits to lure Hollywood film.productions to the country? That is free taxpayer cash to film productions if they shoot in the country?

You mean that wasn't offered as a plausible explanation as to how a dirt poor no money to pay rent American band would be in the middle of the English countryside? LOL.

So, they are not even bothering to make that stuff make sense? And people are mad at me bringing up free film tax grants? When the tax grants are not only destructive to the community through disastrous fiscal policy, but they are also making plots of movies nonsensical? Oh dear...

tax grants are not only destructive to the community

Tell that to New Orleans and Atlanta. I live in New Orleans and work in the film industry. The tax credits have helped the city so much. We have the MOST feature films down here than anywhere else. Hollywood isn't even ahead of Louisiana now. With all of these features comes more tourist. Not just because of the normal tourist French Quarter or Mardi Gras vacations, but people have come here to see filming locations. That money spend here goes back to the city. So no, tax grants are not destructive to the community. I don't know why you think that.

reply

Well, my family settled in Louisiana BEFORE the American Revolution and I'm very well aware of New Orleans tourism. It is NOT tied to movies, but rather food, jazz, Mardi gras, and culture. Sometimes Super Bowl..... Anyone who says otherwise is either working for the film industry, NOT a Cajun or just lying....sorry but true...

Sure, they love having movies too....BUT....That being said, this is about DATA... Not experience and thrill of seeing stars........ Of course the program is successful in terms of LURING Hollywood to Louisiana. Who wouldn't go to where FREE money is? No one...but that's not the measure of success for Louisiana taxpayers.... the legislature is giving money away and NOT recouping it. The videos I posted say for every $1 spent to fund the program (Hollywood free money giveaway) it costs taxpayers $7 to chase that return on that $1....would you invest in a money making venture where you had to spend $7 to recoup every $1 you invested?

Doubtful...

So, hospitals, schools, courts, homeless veterans, roads, disabled folks go without so Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen can get up to $20,000,000 to make films in Louisiana they NEVER have to pay back. Hollywood millionaire welfare....

To the detriment of the citizens....

This is not an issue unique to Louisiana. Or Atlanta... New Zealanders got ticked off when they spent something like $60,000,000 to help the Hobbit get made and it made over 1$ billion but Peter Jackson said, "tough cookies....it was a gift" (paraphrasing)....for the luxury of getting me to your country for a few months....

It's absurd...honestly... just say that you ENJOY the government spending hundreds of millions of dollars so you can get a 20 second glimpse of your favorite golden calf celebrity idol that you choose by your FREE WILL to worship and be done with it....but don't waste MY time trying to convince me that the state's OWN financial DATA on the subject is wrong and that this isn't a huge money wasting scam where tax payers end up losing once again...

I think the band is English, and they went off to the US after a while (why not).

The seaside town at the start, and the rest of the bits in Ireland, are filmed in Bray in Co. Wicklow, in Ireland. My girlfriend lived there and I regularly visited it, it was very strange to see it and then English police cars arriving.

Only one is French, (judging by the accents). The rest of the band are American and the main character who joins the band is English.

Didn't they even put a red bus or telephone box or something in Bray too? That was supposed to be England, then they engineered a trip to Ireland to make the album, then a trip to the states for SxSW. I assume they had an advance from a record company, though that would have been a brave record company!

By the way, I always assumed SxSW was a huge outdoor festival, but it seemed to take place in a small cattle shed here. Is anyone familiar with it?

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

reply

Yeah I think they did! So strange, especially on their trip "to Ireland" when they passed two Dublin bridges on the M50, then got a boat from Wales to Ireland...haha

reply

SXSW is not an traditional music festival like you would see in the UK during the summer. It takes place in venues around Austin, TX (although in the movie, locations in New Mexico stood in). It is more than just music and includes movies and conferences.

reply

Yeah SXSW is more like a convention with a music festival involved. It seemed like in the movie the band was part of a "new discovery" category which is why the stage was small and club-like.

And that's all very interesting of where they filmed the beginning. I still don't understand how they got their van from the Ireland to Texas haha, or even how Frank managed to runaway and get back to Kansas with no money and serious mental breakdown issues, but I could 'suspend my belief' for the sake of the story. It was all very meaningful story-wise.

reply

I was totally surprised by this too. Everything looked completely Irish (I've been to that bit of beach at the start, so it's not completely fair), then they're suddenly taking a ferry to Dublin. What?! I even paused the movie to go look this up...

I'm off to watch the rest of it...

reply

Thanks, Flexi and lmf, that makes more sense then.

I saw an interview with Fassbender where he said Soronpfrbs was indeed an American band. That was all he said on the subject though.

reply

The van they're using has an "S" on the licenceplate and the plate looks pretty Swedish.
