This is a 'nothing' movie

Nothing happens. It's Just a bunch of mute people walking in slo mo.

There was no point in this even being made..

Some people look deeper, and still find it nothing, or slow, or boring.

"Looking deeper" should not be used as an excuse.
Personally, I love deeper movies that make me think. But an important item would be timing. Which this movie doesn't have. It's like a magic trick that you keep repeating, and sooner or later the magic wears off.

For me personally, after 30 minutes, that happened.
Still eye-candy, but not entertaining.

This is wonderfully hypocritical.

Only God Forgives has plenty of subtext, but most of it is made trivial by overacting and surreal style. It drowns any real catharsis in petty moody exaggerations.

Under The Skin on the other hand, has massive subtext on Vegetarianism, human instinct, gender norms, and empathy. Perhaps you should listen to your own condescending advice. ;)

Well spoken, on both comments. Thank you for taking the time to elaborate.

Looking back on it, you weren't being condescending, and I think my brain added it in while reading, so I apologize for the accusation.

Also, I can't agree more about the priority in storytelling to be entertaining your audience. If you can make them think about the story/character/decisions after it's over, then all the better. But to discount the value of entertainment, and rely solely on confusing your audience into piecing substance together in order to make their time feel valued... is a movie crime.

I personally didn't care much for either movie, but I appreciated that they challenged me. however, like you stated, the hidden substance of these movies are not particularly deep or meaningful. I found them obvious in hindsight.

I think the difference between the fans of these films and everyone else, is an unwavering love of unorthodox mystification, whether or not it's rewarding.

PS. I have the book. It's collecting dust.

I was re-reading them and I cringed a bit when I saw that I was being a bit hostile.

Haha, no worries. I do that a lot, myself.

The Inherent Vice trailer just came out today

I've been waiting for that, thanks for the heads up. It looks as good as I was hoping it would. PT Anderson is so good.

Any thoughts on Birdman yet?
