One of the bigger letdowns
Being a huge fan of Gosling and Refn, I expected a lot. What I got felt like a dream-like homage to Michael Mann, circa 1988. Shot like a bad episode of Miami Vice, but without the FCC breathing down his neck, Refn give us a fairly simply revenge story, but with a twist. Everyone in this is an awful human being. I think, had Refn not thrown in the mother, played in almost comically bad (but not so bad as being comical) fashion by Kristen Scott Thomas, this could have been a decent film. The inner battle between vengeance and knowing his brother is awful, could have played out better than this finished product. In the end, we're left with nothing to like. Note to future filmmakers....no more never-ending karaoke scenes. This movie has, gulp, three of them.
