Internet language is a funny thing

waaaaaaaay back when this movie came out i made a post expressing my thoughts on this film's potential future as a cult film, but it was unfortunately not long after i had started saying anything on the internet at all so my choice of words was not exactly careful or well thought out.

back then i was very unfamiliar with "internet speak" so my post came across like i was saying "maybe you just didn't get it" which i found out much later is deemed offensive on the web, but for a while that confused me, especially since more than a few negative reviews i read stated that they didn't understand it, i guess it also didn't help that i stupidly thought "hater" was a term used to describe anyone on the negative side, whether they really did hate it or just didn't like it a little bit.

imagine my confusion when people said i was being pretentious, it's funny because now i understand why, saying "maybe you just didn't get it" is deemed pretentious because it means whoever said it thinks they're smarter then those who don't like it, at the time i couldn't make any sense out of anyone who said things like "oh, you only like this movie because you think you're smart".

my point here is that i looked back on the post and thought yeah, this should probably go, i have become more accustomed to internet etiquette over time and my wording of defence of the post was not very smart and i do owe some apologies, sorry guys, this sh!t happens from time to time.

But i'm still a bit confused, why exactly are the words "maybe you just didn't get it" considered so offensive? i always used to think well, what if you really, honestly didn't get it? that's been my reason for not liking some films, i'll gladly say i didn't get it if i don't really understand what a film was going for, like the remake/spiritual sequel to "the town that dreaded sundown", the best way for me to explain why i didn't like it is saying i didn't get it. when i used the words in the original post i wasn't trying to look smart or special because i "got" it, those negative reviews i read clearly stated that they didn't understand it so…

i dunno, maybe i'm at it again, but if anyone has any theories on why those words are so offensive i'd be happy to read them, what am i missing here exactly?

It's because everybody gets trophies now.

Every person who has ever used the internet is the smartest person on the planet, and if you even accidentally suggest that maybe they aren't literally the smartest person on the planet, they'll come down on you hard.

The movie was hard to grasp and very subjective. Not a movie that everyone will enjoy.

People will attack just about anything from behind a keyboard, just add anyone really ignorant to your ignore list.

I wouldn't worry about offending anyone by saying they don't get this film. The simple truth is that it's likely they have no clue what Refn was trying to convey. If they don't get it, they're probably not going to like it. Most don't want to spend time trying to figure films out and rather have garbage handed to them on a plate a la John Wick.

What happens when someone understands OGF and also enjoyed watching John Wick? Is that the solution to time travel?

Almost everyone on the interweb gets a cheap self esteem boost by telling...you for example... that you are wrong or politically incorrect, and that they are right and YOU ARE WRONG!
SOME people will even dig into your VERY old comments to try and make you seem contradictory. Just
because they are too stupid to grow and change as people themselves, they can't comprehend others growing and changing things like outlook or opinions.
Don't rent out space in your head to them.?
