Minor spoiler: why did they have to kill ***?

I'm not native english speaker and I had trouble understanding this part. What did Bob mean by "Marv skimming off his own stash"? What was "viable bussines opportunity"? And why did they wanted to prevent people from knowing Wheelan returned the money? I'm just missing something between the lines here... I though I was getting good at english but no matter how many times I go through Bob's monologue, I can't make out what it means, lol.

Please don't put spoilers in the title of your post. Regardless if you think it was minor, you put a spoiler in the topic of your post.

That's right. When I was your age, television was called books.

reply

Sorry. In my defense, I didn't specify who had to kill him :)

Richie was killed because if he was left alive he would assert that the debt was paid. In other words "Dead men tell no tales."

Yes, but that's exactly what I don't get. Why would it be a problem if people knew that the debt had been paid?

reply

Marv had Bob kill him because he not only wanted to keep the money Richie owed him, but he also wanted to take the rest of Richie's winnings for himself as well because he had won about twice as much as he owed Marv, which was what the "business opportunity" was. So they basically killed him to keep people from finding out that Marv stole from him.

Marv was a loan shark, someone who shakes people down and collects their debts on behalf of the mob. But he was skimming off the top, pocketing some of it for himself.

Wheelan owed the mob a bunch of money, and Marv at the same time had gotten himself in debt from gambling problems.

So Marv kept Wheelan's money for himself to cover his debt and then had Wheelan killed so he couldn't tell anybody. Because Marv stole from the mob by keeping the money for himself.
