Why isn't Reynolds, who appears to be an above-average driver, able to out run, or at least out-drive, the SUV and the van? The SUV might be competitive in outright speed to the BMW (especially a lower end model), but no way does it handle as well as even an average BMW.

The heavy traffic and crowds of pedestrians slowed him down considerably.

On a straightaway that Beemer would have been long gone, no doubt.
