The Quiet Earth

This film is nearly identical in plot minus some amazing science-fiction to that of The Quiet Earth (1985) based on the novel by Harrison of the same name (1981). For all intents and purposes, this film is a reboot.

Ironically, the original film is set in and made in New Zealand and arguably superior in every way as a post-apocalyptic thriller with some hard science-fiction on par with such films as Primer, Predestination, Coherence, etc.

Exactly, The Quiet Earth came to my mind too, and I surely agree it's far superior than this, let's not call it reboot, but remake of it. But I'm not surprised that fact didn't cross the minds of other forum members, because The Quiet Earth is a rare gem, one of the most underrated movies in history, and surely a little known outside New Zealand and hardcore Sci-Fi herd.

The movie that came to my mind is this one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053454/reference, The World, the Flesh and the Devil, which i would assume this is actually a remake of.

Yeah I loved the Quiet Earth, and only found out about it by actively seeking out sci fi movies. I'd never heard of it before, and neither has anyone I've asked since.

You think that's air you're breathing now?

I think I mentioned the same thing a couple of months ago on here but people hadn't seen the quiet earth. It's excellent and should be more recognized

I haven't seen Z for Zachariah yet, but based on the description, I totally thought of The Quiet Earth, too.

As a Kiwi I've never understood the high regard in which The Quiet Earth is held, and I've watched it a couple of times. It's not a terrible movie but for mine it's strictly average.

i enjoyed the quiet earth back in the day, and even a few rewatches for nostalgia but i wont be watching this remake.. it just sounds crap.

I too saw parallels with The Quiet Earth which I also agree is a rare little gem :D

This film started off strong, was okish in the mid and then fell apart towards the end. As many users here have pointed out, another man around is a strength to their survival not a complication. Look at what they can achieve together with 3 working. Not to mention a wider variety of offspring is possible. In this kind of scenario I would think a love triangle between the three of them is not only possible but advisable! It's the end of the world... being all macho and alpha male like has no place, it would doom them! Once trust is gained and a ruling out of anyone being a psychopathic killer, I wished the film explored this angle more than a simple 'jealously' angle (leading to murder... <sigh>)

No way can this be regarded as a remake of Quiet earth. There are similarity, ie 2 men and 1 woman surviving as seemingly the last people on earth. The plot is far deeper in QE and dealing with the results of an experiment going wrong and changing the law of physics as we know it. If you recall the 3 survivors were all at the point of death when the "effect" happened. We don't even know if they are still on earth.

I really enjoyed both movies but for me QE is another level.
