Opinions and Questions about the first 3 episodes...
So, what do people think about the show so far? I just caught the episodes that have aired (I'm in the US by the way). This could contain spoilers, so look out.
The thing that made We Can Be Heroes and especially Summer Heights High so amazing to me is the emotional shift. The characters and story lines went from hilarious/edgy to depressing/truly emotional. Take the transformation of the Jonah character or Mr. G... To a lesser extent the other characters.
What strikes me as weird is that with Angry Boys, things have been depressing right from the get go. Nathan's hearing loss, Daniel dealing with Nathan potentially leaving. S.Mouse getting put on house arrest, getting *beep* from his family and 'girlfriend', and getting dropped from his label. Blake having no nuts and living in the past. Gran dealing with those kids and mentioning the suicide of one.
These situations and characters feel almost too realistic, too grounded, too broken. Kind of like Phil Olivetti (but he was funny because he believed he was such a hero). It's amazing that Lilley can flesh characters like this out, but I think he went too deep too soon. The comedy hasn't been there as much in the start of this series, as compared to his other two.
I'm also curious about his approach with not introducing all the characters and switching between them. I'm pretty sure he is just trying to shake up his formula and make the point of Dan being the main character obvious, but I'd rather have been introduced to them all a little quicker. I was a little bored with just Gran and Nathan/Daniel in the first episode.
The first episode was the funniest to me.
By no means is this a hate thread, I will still watch the rest, and still am a big Chris Lilley fan... But I am left feeling a little underwhelmed and a bit too grounded. It hasn't been an escape to these new characters where we see their lighter side before we see their real issues, and I'm not sure how I feel about that approach.
