The movie was great all the way up to about 15 minutes left in the film then it just got silly which is a shame because it had built up some good suspense and atmosphere. The movie looked fantastic, but unfortunately was blemished by the ending imo.

I would've had Arthur and Joseph make it home safely. After his experience in Crythin-Gifford, Arthur has a new lease on life and with the money he's made from his job, he goes out and buys a car.
Arthur and Joseph are tooling along down a country road in their new car. The sun is shining; the birds are singing, etc. All's right with the world. Suddenly, out from behind a large tree steps the Woman in Black. Arthur slams on the brakes to avoid her... and the car tips over and crashes down the embankment, killing both him and Joseph.
Fade to black.

Have you read the book? Your ending is much closer to the book ending and would have worked much better. It lulls us into a false sense of security and then bam, there she is again. Personally I didn't like the idea of reuniting the whole family at the end, it was too twee.

I read the book and saw the 1989 movie. I loved this movie, but the ending was rather a disappointment.

This may sound evil, but I actually wanted the gloomy ending where the train hit Arthur and Joseph killing them. I was kind of disappointed when it turned out the spirit of the mother saved them. I tend to prefer dark endings in my horror movies.

I thought we were seeing their ghosts, they were dead from the train so they were able to see the dead wife/mom??
shareOh, maybe. I interpreted it like the mother's ghost interfered with the attempts of The Woman In Black to kill her son and husband so they ended up getting away because she saved their lives. I might have misunderstood, though. I do get confused quite easily.
