Tobey Maguire looks more like Anatoly Karpov than Bobby Fischer
I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on Maguire's acting but he certainly doesn't look anything like Fischer.

shareI and my friends in forums on chess dot com also don't really like McGuire playing Fischer because neither the appearance nor his mannerisms look like Fischer. Ideally it should have been Nick Cage playing at least the older Fischer. Not sure if they could have made him look young . Cage has the same nose and facial structure.
shareI couldn't help but chuckle at your title thread. Amusing and quite true.
After all... tomorrow is another day.
I haven't seen the film yet, but I remember reading the preview poster at the movie theatre and thinking, "Tobey Maguire as Bobby Fischer? Someone's pulling my leg."
I like Maguire as an actor, but this is a situation I think it's important to give an accurate physical and verbal suggestion of the real person the actor's playing. Aside from Maguire's just not being the right physical type, in the trailer and scenes I've viewed so far, it doesn't sound like he got Fischer's voice, Brooklyn pronunciation, or manner quite right. He strikes me more as someone trying to do a Joe Pesci imitation. Too bad, because Fischer is a fascinating character study for an actor.
I think of Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator. Blanchett doesn't physically resemble Hepburn, but she does manage to suggest the woman through careful voice work and body language. I don't see much of Fischer in Maguire's portrayal, at least in the little I've seen so far.
I may change my mind when I see the movie.
