What did Lombardy constantly have in his mouth?

In just about every shot, it seems, Lombardy is sucking on some sort of small object in his mouth. In his first scene, we see him put one of them in his mouth, but it's not really clear what it is. Are they mints, or something?

Maybe they were trying to make amends for the fact that they cast tall, lean actor in the role of Lombardy. Was there way of saying..
'Yeah we know'.

It could have been his way of quitting smoking? In one scene he asks bobby's agent/organizer if he could have one of his cigarettes. That means he doesn't actually smoke on regular basis otherwise he'd have his own pack. I don't know whether this detail actually happened in history. But chewing gum in movies has been used elsewhere to show that someone is quitting.
