I wonder if Bobby Fischer was autistic.

I ask because I know many of these labels (like Autism/Asperger's) were far less diagnosed back in the day.

Just some of the signs he portrayed left me wondering...

- Obsession over one thing.

- Savant-like abilities

- Sensitivity to noise

- Emotional outbursts

Any Questions??

reply

ASPERGER'S SYNDROME probably.

If you're basing your 'diagnosis' on the movie, that's very silly.

Based on what I've seen of the real person, I would say paranoid schizophrenic is more likely.

However I'm not a doctor and I haven't examined him.

any intelligent introverted type person is considered autistic these days.

Considering he could make eye contact and coold read people's emotions I highly doubt it.

reply

It's a spectrum disorder with a variety of traits. Eye contact and being able to push other people's buttons would not rule it out.

In 2016 doctors would have had that lil boy drugged up on tons of medication. Unfortunately... this is the world we live in now, lol.

Bobby Fischer lived an extremely tragic life. I have very mixed feelings on psychopharmacology, but in his particular case could medication not have helped him live an at least somewhat more dignified life for the final sad 30 years?

reply

psychology is bull crap

reply

Then it's a good thing we're talking about psychiatry here and not psychology.

reply

It's hard to be sure since he is no longer alive but based on his symptoms you are probably right. When I hear about the "autism epidemic" I want to laugh. It's not that more people are becoming autistic, but scientists have changed how it is defined so that more people can be labeled as such. It used to be that autism meant you were unable to function in mainstream society, now it's anybody who is bad at sports or has trouble relating to the opposite sex.

reply

It's a spectrum with varying degrees of functionality.

reply

There has been speculation on whether Bobby Fischer had a psychiatric condition. At this point the topic is moot.
