Thanks for the reminder. I read the Guardian review for Ain't Them Bodies Saints a few months ago, but in the absence of a release yet, I had forgotten about it. The trailer (and reviews) do make it seem Malicky, which can be a mixed blessing I find, in that it can grate if there's not much more than superficial emulating. Beast of the Southern Wild and David Gordon Green's work had that effect on me.
I expect Sorrentino's film won't be that way, or even Malick-like. His films aren't really coming from the same place, other than having a similarly wonderful and assured command of images, sound and music. Think Bertolucci at his best, or what Scorsese strives for (and usually falls-short) or Tarrantino with a brain and a heart (imagine that!). 'The Great Beauty' trailer seems more like a teaser, setting the(/a?) scene, and hence cooler and more supremely confident than what generally passes for great trailers.
Maybe I am exaggerating to make a point, I'll admit that much ;)
EDIT: And I'll throw in a Fellini and Coen bros influence/flavour (depending on which of his films you watch) just for good measure!
