...wait a decade before releasing a new film. I have absolutely loved every movie he's directed before.. heck, I have a poster of The Tree of Life in my living room.. But I found To The Wonder to be too subpar.. too staged.. too pushed-down-your-throat.. too volatile.. too rigid.. I am honestly disappointed.

Without having seen To the Wonder(will in two weeks time), yet being fairly familiar with all of Mr. Malick's earlier features, I'd say your descriptions above goes completely contrary to my own experience of the general "Malick imprinting," and certainly all trailers and clips I've seen from the film. Too staged? I believe I've read how Mr. Malick intended for Wonder to be his least theatrical work to date(also as in: the film with the most found-moment, even accidental "vibe"), and I can hardly imagine the inverted version of anti-theatrical traits being at play here, unless you're after the montage of these "moments" possessing a staged feel? Too pushed-down-your-throat? How's the film more dictation than, I gather, questioning and mere (honest) observation/introspection? Perhaps the film is focusing more keenly on issues, without answering them as such, that requires or induces ones attention more directly, which could in some minds be seen as a violation of the urge to "look away"? Too volatile? Hmm, I'd refer to claimed non-staged "quality"(to whom this may apply) and whether this is not linked with a mecurial nature. Too rigid? What's rigid about the film - please explain? Malick's films feels progessively non-rigid to me in that they let me form my own oppinions and impressions, so I'd be interested to learn what sets this film apart, in your view, from his earlier work in this regard.
It's completely fair to be disappointed with a film, but I guess I'm very surprised by your reasoning for being disappointed here, even though my basis is unfounded - or at least loosely so.

Having seen To the Wonder , I have to say, I really have no idea of what you are talking about. But you really didn't offer any examples to support your opinions.
