Great interview with el Chivo (cinematographer)

For anyone that's interested, here's his two cents:

"Terry didn’t say this, but I felt that he was trying to separate To the Wonder from all the moviemaking that’s still connected to theater — from movies that feel acted, prepared and rehearsed. We were trying to find a more cinematographic approach to filmmaking and a way of using film language that was less connected to theater and literature and other art forms. Terry wants this art form to have its own way of expressing ideas and emotions, and that’s what was very exciting about the movie."

Yeah that's a good read.

Well so far I think they *beep* up. Lubezki can wax luminous all he wants but that doesn't apologize for his horrendous uninteresting shots. Improvised cinematography doesn't have to be prepared and well-lit, but the shot itself should be intriguing. A lot of the cutaways are so uninspired—they may not have had much to work with, granted, but then they shouldn't have been shooting in such dismal locations.

So far, the stuff in France (beginning) was great. But once they returned to America, I've been bored out of my mind.
