Just so people know

supermarkets in France are just as clean as ours are.

I'm a little disconcerted by how many times Malick had the actresses say how clean ("propre!") the American market was.

Um, Carrefour is about the cleanest large chain grocers in France I've ever seen, about five times as nice as most of the larger, nicer grocers I've seen in the States. The only difference is, France also has small brick-and-mortar grocers (also clean) because chains haven't consumed every bit of the culture out there as it has here.

lot of other problems with the film so far too, but just trying to get my way through it.

Ha, that's something that came up when I was watching the film too. They have giant supermarkets in France that are the same as American markets and stores. It seemed odd that she was so impressed by the American stores. Auchan is another giant market/superstore type of place you see all over the place.

Yes, it is a complaint I have heard many times from French friends that large chains have put many small places out of business. We of course had the same sort of response to Wal-Marting America. I think another difference, at least the major one to me, is you can get great food at a lot of the larger markets in France and the French still take food a lot more seriously than many Americans. I just think there is a higher level of quality control in France when it comes to food. Although I will say there are now some great markets in the US as well...well, on the East and West Coasts where I have lived.

I will say that when I was last in France in the suburbs of Paris some of the towns themselves looked "dirty" and had been horribly covered in graffiti. This was a major disappointment to me as they had not looked like that before and it was truly a shame that they had come to that. Maybe we were supposed to think she had been living in one of these areas...not really sure as you don't discover much about the characters. On the markets though, I agree the French have big well lit, clean stores that are like the American stores.
