Probably right ... good point, I hadn't thought of like that. But in essence, it was really Marina who fell for her own sob story. She had already cut off the relationship -- she should have left it cut off. Even when she first came to America, as her daughter said, there was something missing. I didn't realize it was true of the gypsy friend as well, but both the daughter and the friend were apparently counseling Marina wisely. I think she had to go back to France because separating from her daughter was wrong, even if she might not live with her daughter when she got there ... but at least she would be accessible; their relationship was too strong. I felt rather as if Marina vis a vis Neil was like the doomed relationships of old in which a girl got pregnant to get a guy to marry her. Those seem to work nowadays, though, for some reason, so I'm not really sure why Marina and Neil couldn't work. But I was relieved Marina would be near her daughter again.
