Why marina had the tryst with the carpenter ? can anyone explain? why she cheated on neil?

The carpenter was a temporary escape for Marina from all of that. He loved and respected her for her and that was that. Once it happened, her guilt took over and she realized she still loved Neil, hence her telling him and the eventual divorce.
