Did anyone else find Sarah Silverman's character's 'breakdown'...

[SPOILERS AHEAD] ...a bit heavy-handed? Besides, it seemed like her character was "LOOKING FOR" someone to "blame" for her falling off the wagon into un-sobriety...I wanted Margot to tell her so! "OK, so our marriage breaks apart, so YOU GO ON A DRUNKEN BENDER, and that's MY fault?!?!"

OR, maybe the screenwriter wanted to toss in a scene of Sarah S being "dramatic" and it didn't quite work as Sarah seemed to be playing herself, mostly.

Agreed. Yes, Silverman's character was drunk, angry and trying to hurt Michelle's character. That said, Silverman also gave us the point of the movie in a nutshell. That their marriage troubles were actually just Michelle's problems.

silverman's character delivered the theme of the movie in the line, "life has gaps.... it just does.... but you don't go out and try to fill it with (i forget the rest of the quote).

the difference between American and foreign movies:

in American movies, a minor character has to specifically state the theme of the movie. nothing is left for the audience to figure out.

if morgan freeman is in the movie, be assured that his character will be the one that states the theme. :)

actually, the theme was also stated in the shower... "new gets old too".

the quality of a screenplay is inversely proportional to the number of times that a minor character has to explain the theme to the audience.

Well, I don't know what you mean by 'foreign' when you summarize: "...the difference between American and foreign movies..."

"Take This Waltz" is a Canadian movie which was written and directed by a Canadian, filmed in Canada, and produced by Canadian organizations including, Joe's Daughter, Astral Media, and The Harold Greenberg Fund.

You couldn't follow that? Canada is a separate country and thus foreign to Americans even if we share a similar culture and accent. I mean, Canadian films even get nominated in the Foreign Film category at the Oscars.

That's true.

I must have been too much in the "Canada is a fifty-first state of the USA" state of mind when I wrote that.

I think the confusion lies in the fact that a lot of Hollywood movies are filmed in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal due to tax credits, but they're still American productions. Whereas movies like Take This Waltz and others that are nominated at Genies (Canada's Oscars) are solely Canadian productions.

In real life an alcoholic will find any reason to drink, theirs or not

I don't think she was blaming her, I thought she was telling her even though she made a mistake but Margot did a bigger one.

i am absolutely confused here
r u asking why do we find what she did to be wrong? or why do we find it awful and disgusting?
coz whether it was wrong or not, that is obvious
criticizing her is normal, she is on the spot and that is what ppl do when it comes to movies or books or series, they criticize the lead characters as they represent or present certain cases
she had doubts, how abt checking them out or working them out b4 saying yes to Lou's marriage offer? b4 promising to be with him for the rest of her life?
and I don't get how u would think he didn't leave her and followed her and how she will stand by him?
he refused to take her back, they never talked after she left until he called her when Geraldine relapsed and they didn't talk after that too
now I wanna ask u a question, would u find it ok and justified if ur wife had doubts and seeked happiness elsewhere and allowed a stranger to tell her what he wanna do to her in bed using those words like the F word and c*m etc...?
would u be ok if she jumped in his bed without even invitation and the reason nothing happened was coz she wanted him to do it instead of asking her to start?
