Is it supposed to be a parody? spoilers

I sort of appreciated the movie up until the point when Elise donned that ludicrous huge, awkward gas mask to communicate with the spirits. What on earth was that for? It was so out of place--I can't believe they put that in the movie. It had to be a joke. That, and the unfunny bickering assistants with their hokey Ghostbuster equipment made the movie go downhill from there. Was it supposed to be a comedy? I don't think it was, yet these ridiculous elements were there as if it was a parody, and the "demons" were so fake-looking, they elicited no more than a yawn from this viewer.

The "Ghostbuster" esque characters, I always felt were a little nod to the investigators from, Poltergeist.

As for the mask, it's just weird disturbing type image.

It looked funny but it made sense. She was trying to channel the nightmare world and needed sensory deprivation and reliable breathing mechanism.

Agreed. It brought a "scientific" element to the supernatural story/seance. Not sure why the OP would start babbling about parodies. May be she wanted the characters holding hands and staring into crystal balls.🐭

Exactly, i also feel that the field they're in is very "Unconventional" so the tools they use, including the gas mask, would be too... Its not like its an exact science lol. They use their OWN mechanisms to do what they do... I don't see why it would be far fetched

Yeah.

That part was lame as hell; the two guys looked like Mormon elders, and the gas mask was idiotic. The only creepy part was the doll-faced family; the rest was largely stupid, except for Lyn Shaye. Not her character, just her.
