Who are the doll-faced family in old house?

Who are the doll faced family in the old house that the father encounters? I never could figure it out. I understand that it a family, and I guess the daughter shoots her family. BUT what I don't understand is who they are and what they are doing there, or why it was even relevant. Were they a previous family that lived in that house and haunt it? What is the story behind them?? What do they add to the haunting or possession of the boy?

If I had my way, they'd be the centre of a whole movie on their own. That whole part was far, far more unsettling than the rest of the movie.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!! They were far more scary than the demon chasing the boy. Well, the most frightening part of the whole movie for me was the old lady that wanted dad! I know she only has minutes in the movie, but she freaked me out!

It wasn't explained because it wasn't directly relevant. Besides, explaining the whole thing explicitly would make it lose its mystique. I figure it's a family that experienced a mass murder back in the 1950s or so, coincidentally in the same house or another one near it, and Josh happened to come across it because he had crossed over into the other dimension. It had no immediate bearing on what was going on with Dalton. It was just something else that was there. Its randomness is part of what makes it particularly good, IMO.
