In addition to having more effective scares than usual, there's a lot of imagination and creativity on display in this one with The Further and the various entities that come from there. Plus there's a stronger emphasis on the characters than usual, its very nicely shot, and has a terrific score.

+1 great shots, good atmosphere and nice mixture of suspense and jumps. the further was like mastercraft IMO rarely could a movie do a "spirit realm" well, but insidious did. was fun like you said and didn't take itself TOO seriously while still maintaining itself and it's genre and general nervousness pretty much throughout.
it was just honestly close to perfect, a scary movie doesn't get much better IMO.
