Cliched soundtrack

I hated the xylophone/marimba/glockenspiel soundtrack that piped up in this whenever somebody had a realisation, or something meaningful happened - its like a lazy shorthand signifier these days to make you think what you're watching has deep meaning. Just because American Beauty had a great soundtrack, doesn't mean you can steal it and hope you can fool people into thinking your films just as good.

Haven't seen the film, but I heard the main song which is eligible for the oscars, it didn't make my top 5 but I liked it better than most of the competition.

I want the daily poll back.

reply

Agreed, it was a very typical independent type of theme.

God forbid a sweeping orchestra. "Independent type of theme"? Do you even know what any of those terms mean in film? Do you know what the word theme means?

Unless you want to expand on your statement, how is it a very typical independent type of "theme"?

reply

Good...good...let the hate flow through you.

Are you the composer of the films completely unoriginal and uninspired theme? As in "main theme".

We are talking about the music of the film in this thread. It should be quite obvious as to what I meant to anyone with basic levels of comprehension.

Not the theme or subject of the story, not good vs. evil, just plain old music, as the title of the thread suggest. Fool.

God some people are *beep* jaded. Thanks Internet, every schmoe has an opinion they can broadcast. And yes, I am painfully aware of the irony when I myself am now guilty of it. Bottom line: we all suck, and it's a fact.

reply

I agree completely. Not much variation to the soundtrack as a whole, and somewhat numbingly "predictable."

For an "indie" film soundtrack...it's simply bland. Nowhere remotely close to Garden State, Lost in Translation, American Beauty, Requiem for a Dream, City of God, Motorcycle Diaries, Oldboy, or any of the other top 100 indie juggernauts.

Just my opinion. Not trying to offend anyone who thinks differently.

Was that type of soundtrack invented by American Beauty? I remember American Beauty had this type of music. But was it the movie that brought such music into wide usage in film industry? Just wondering.
