So why were the three good fairies allowed to the princess' christening?

Weren't the humans and the moors still enemies?

reply

The script didn't address it at all. If the fairies had been the heroines of the original film, it would be because they wanted to make peace with the humans, and use their powers for good.

I bet you ten bucks that there was a scene explaining their separation from the rest of the fairies in an earlier draft of the script, but since the final version was a star vehicle for the leading actress and all the other characters had to look weak or stupid, that was cut. But yes, they don't seem to represent the other fairies and certainly don't represent Maleficent the lead fairy, they seem to be acting on their own. For reasons that the script never bothers to explain.

Actually, the original script (or at least the one that was floating around the internet during the Fall of 2012) did address the things you mention, otter (at least somewhat). After Maleficent takes over the faerie realm, the 3 pixies find the moors to be uninhabitable (and are also quite frightened of the dark turn Maleficent has taken- all the more so since they treated Maleficent poorly ever since childhood; in the original screenplay, Maleficent was an outcast (and not a hero) in the faerie realm and the 3 "good" pixies were especially horrible towards her, which resulted in them becoming her sworn enemies). As a result, they seek refuge at King Stefan's castle. Stefan wants nothing to do with the fair folk but his kind wife, Queen Leila, convinces him to allow them to stay (although Stefan is none too pleased at the thought of them hanging around). When Aurora is eventually born, they're permitted to attend her christening so that they can grant her a magical gift (largely due to Queen Leila's request).

Here's a deleted scene from the film of the pixies asking the newly crowned Stefan for permission to live at the castle (found on the Maleficent Blu-ray): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu_2LpReTL0

I hope this clears up the confusion! 😀

Thanks so much for your informative reply. Though to be honest, my respect for this film and all its drafts just dropped to a new low.

Actually it is well explained in the movie. The voiceover says the fairies were seeking to bring peace between the kingdoms so they approach the ceremony in that spirit. You can see the king is gesturing as if he will throw them out or have them withheld, but the queen convinces him otherwise.

You couldn't see it in the theatre, only on the DVD - the scene was deleted.

reply

Because Linda Woolverton couldn't write if her life depended on it.

reply

In fact, she can. Her screenplay addresses it, it's not her fault that the scene was deleted.

reply

Doesn't matter. It doesn't change the fact that she took a very iconic character and altered her beyond recognition for the sake of it. Her original screenplay sucked just as badly if not worse; I know because I read that too. Barely anything was changed. Maleficent still never turns evil, she still becomes the princess's "fairy godmother", everyone is still taken out of character (Stefan becoming a one-dimensional villain and the three fairies the unfunny Jar Jar Binks Three Stooge wannabes), and Maleficent never turns into the dragon. Movie still sucks balls no matter what they cut or didn't cut; probably would have been worse if they kept the whole script intact!

I'm late to this but I agree with you.. Worst movie. Worst Disney movie.

You could look at their presence as their attempt at fostering goodwill between the fairies and the humans.

Fairies are not suppose to be at a christening. They are not Christian and are pagan. That was no christening but a pagan rite that is similar. I hate this movie. It took everything away from the original story Im not against feminism but these fairytales are not sexist but were based off of old folktales where people encoutered supernatural beings.
