For Maleficent shippers and non-shippers...

For those who want to see Aurora and Maleficent as a couple in the Maleficent movie sequel I respect your yearning for such a dynamic and new pairing in a Disney film. Yes, it is about time Disney allowed one of it's princesses to have a romance. The closest thing so far is Ruby and Dorothy in Once Upon a Time and poor Mulan's unreturned affections for Aurora (also in Once Upon a Time).

However, as much as I want such a couple to exist in a mainstream Disney film I do not want anyone to get their hopes up about it being Maleficent and Aurora. It's a cute ship but I strongly suspect it will never be official canon and this may be a good thing.

Though Maleficent could very easily be a bisexual character (and in my head she probably is) there is a mother-daughter dynamic between her and Aurora whether some want to see it or not. Maleficent and Diaval practically raised Aurora in the first movie. In fact toddler Aurora was portrayed by Angelina Jolie's real-life daughter. So to not see a mother-daughter connection with the two characters requires some (in my opinion) extraordinary mental gymnastics. And this is true no matter the gender of the character. I don't think I would be comfortable with Aurora ending up with Prince Phillip if he was portrayed as having practically raised her due to the incompetence of her guardians.

I kind of imagine Diaval and Maleficent as a couple. Diaval isn't quite an ordinary raven anymore. Notice how he has not aged a day since Maleficent met him. And he was with Maleficent over sixteen years. All the human characters aged yet he remained as youthful as the fae characters (who likely stop aging in their adulthoods). This indicates to me that Maleficent didn't just give him a human form, she made him something like a fae servant for herself. At the time she thought she would never get her wings back so it's logical she would want him to serve her forever.

In the early working script for Maleficent Diaval is described as being in love with Maleficent. And I would like to see that expanded upon. I actually think they kind of are a cute (though dysfunctional) couple.

I would also like to see a plot that had been dropped from early concepts reappear. In the early script (which featured fae politics and king Stefan as a half-fae bastard child) it turned out Aurora was part faery as she was destined to rule both lands united. I would love for Aurora to turn out to be part faery and have her own wings as she did at the end of the early working script for the first Maleficent movie. She'd make an amazing faery queen.
