Social Justice Strikes Again

First it started with Ian fucking a tranny, then Ian became a lunatic gay activist and as if Debbie wasn’t awful enough, they now make her a typical third wave feminist shrew crying about inequality. This show has zero characters left to give a shit about.

I completely agree. It's baffling how fast this show went downhill. It used to be so good. But adding politics into the show ruined everything. And I especially agree about Debbie. Her character was always kind of annoying. But now...her character is unbearable. It's sad to see a well-watched series since 2011 end this way.

reply

Hey, we agree again. I still find Frank's bullshit funny. The only story I care about is Lip's, everyone else, I just find annoying.

reply

Really? Lip is just so depressing now. His character used to be so much more live-like. Now he's just obsessing over AA meetings and trying to take care of a kid that's not his. And Frank used to be so hilarious, in a more subtle and believable way. Now everything he says seems to be for shock factor purposes. He's too goofy now.

reply

Yeah, I'm not too crazy about where Lip currently is, but I'm still invested in the overall with him. And, I guess I just really like Frank because he's the least PC of them all, and that is a big contradiction with the rest of the characters and what they're doing, especially this season. He might pretend to be PC and agreeable, but you can count on there always being a hidden agenda.

reply

Well that's true. At least Frank isn't PC. I do give him credit for that. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate his character or anything. I just hate how his character is being diminished by bad writing. And plus, William H. Macy is a great actor. As in for Lip, I haven't liked his character's direction ever since he became a serious alcoholic, and started going to AA meetings. I know that sounds messed up to say. But for the show's sake, I don't think it was a good move. It turns some of the episodes into soap operas. I've noticed that about a lot of good shows. The series will be running smoothly, and then the writers throw in some sort of overly-depressing scenario, and then it throws everything off balance.

reply

I think, and really hope, that Lip's story is going to be the one true "redemption story" in the family; maybe Fiona, too, but I haven't really cared for her in a while, with the ways she acted in the past. The whole coke and cheating on your decent boyfriend era gave me the same feelings that Lip's drinking and rehab has given you. Kinda soap-ish.

And yeah, Macy is great. Most certainly capable of a lot more than Frank is often given.

reply

Honestly, I think if Fiona would've stayed with Steve, and if Lip would've stayed with Karen...the story line would've been improved. What bothered me about the show in the later seasons, is that new characters were emerging in almost every episode. All sense of direction in the show seemed to go off balance. Introducing irrelevant and downright boring characters into the mix.

reply

That's true. I never really thought about how the side characters became really boring. I've always loved Kermit and Tommy, and I thought Joan Cusack was great, but ever since that era... you're right, they're boring as hell. I do hold some optimism for Katey Sagal's character though. I've always been a fan of hers. Maybe she'll get us back on track as far as the side characters. It might be interesting to see what happens when Frank is the primary caretaker for such an individual.

reply

Remember that Katey DESTROYED Sons of Anarchy. That’s when I stopped liking her . . . and her ego.

The guy playing Lip lacks the acting gravitas to be an inspiring character, but Emmy Rossum does.

reply

Oooof, disagree with everything.
