What if the demon WAS David?

So in the beginning of the movie, the mother says that the ghost can not be David since it molests the daughter. That's her reasoning.

However, these are merely assumptions. And what a demon is and isn't, is also assumed throughout the movie. There is still a possibility that the demon/ghost could be David, since the mother was trying to communicate to him at the end of the day, and his dead body's ashes were used for footprints.

I generally think it's not David, but we can't completely set aside this possibility either.

This is a tough one. The paranormal expert basically said it was initially David that was communicating with the mom. However an evil spirit seized the opportunity and overtook his soul in order to enter the mortal world. So techinically it was David, but also wasn't David.

It's all fun and games until someone gets caught. Then it's larceny.

I didn't get the impression it was David at all. It took the identity of David, to be able to gain access of sorts to the family.
It took advantage of the mom's vulnerability, much like the demon of "The Exorcist" and the demon in "Paranormal Activity 3" took advantage of the victims.

It had all the earmarks written about in the literature of being a demon.
I saw no indication it was the ghost of David.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

I thought that was a possibility as well. I know demons are able to disguise as the spirit of a loved one to confuse us, but that doesn't mean that is always the case. Many people pretend to be nice, caring, respectable people to hide who they really are underneath the surface so perhaps David always wanted to hurt Samantha all along and was able to cover up his desires. But on the other hand, it could be a demon disguising as him like most people think (I personally think it was). I like films that are ambiguous and left open to interpretation because it is fun to fill in the blanks yourself.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.
