What's the significance to this entire flick? Nothing was explained, and most 'major' things that happened weren't even acknowledged by the victims after the event.

Who else would it be, for one thing. It happens repeatedly, including when the demon starts turning on ALL the appliances at once to torment them (the night they discover the footprints in the ashes.)
Second, we actually hear the demon *growl* on the answering machine at least twice, if you listen.

Accepted that it could be a demon but when I used to get these sort of calls it was due to nothing less demonic than annoying marketing phishers.
