Nah it's not that simple, the nuclear 'football' is basically a hub that transmits the orders to fire nuclear weapons once the launch codes and other information have been entered. The U.S have the two man rule, meaning the Secretary of Defense has to agree to a nuclear launch, the president doesn't have complete control.
Once the launch codes have been entered the orders are transmitted to subs or silos where the people there confirm the codes again and then launch.
Although there's nothing to say he didn't just take the codes from the Secretary of Defense by force since part of the secret service seemed to be working with him any way.

Aren't vocal identification and authorization both required in addition of the codes?
