I remember when this came out people said it was better

than the first one. Now I see tons of hate for this one and love for the first one. When exactly did that change occur?

And why? The first one is a dreadful movie. The acting is brutal, the effects are even worse, and it had no balls. Baroness and cobra troopers being nothing more than a nanobot zombie? Please. And how are you going to make a movie without Cobra Commander and Destro? Terrible, terrible decisions made in that movie. This one was 10 times more entertaining.

I can't stomach the original and for so many reasons. I legitimately enjoyed this movie.

I liked this one better than the first. My only issue with the first movie was those damn accelerator suits. What's the point of training to be an elite fighting force if all you're gonna do is slap on a suit that makes you nigh invulnerable? Seriously, they're soldiers not superheroes.

The Joes are superheroes though. They haven't been just soldiers since the 60s or 70s. When the brand reinvented itself in the 80s and introduced a very heavy science fiction element, it completely changed the franchise's origins.

I don't mind the concept of the suits, I hated the execution. They looked - particularly the movements and physics of it all - 100% fake. They were ridiculous.

And that certainly wasn't my only problem with that movie. If it were, maybe I'd have actually liked it.

They would've been better suited for a TRANSFORMERS film. The humans could have their exosuits.

I like the first movie, hated the second.
The first one was fun, fresh, energetic and full of life with real characters.
The second one was dull, with bad one liners and robotic characters.

Fresh? Real characters? Stop. Please, I beg of you. You liked the first one more. No problem with that, but please don't pretend it was a real film.

they were both terrible, but at least this one didn't pretend to take itself seriously. I mean, how many pop culture references can they really shoehorn into dialogue? Everything out of Walter Goggin's mouth for example

What are your thoughts on FilmMasterAdam's "G. I. JOE: Retaliation SUCKS!!!!!" and "WHY G.I. JOE: The Rise Of Cobra (2009) is better than G.I JOE: Retaliation (2013)!" reviews?

I 100% agree with this. There was something about the popcorn fun of the first movie that the 2nd film left out. leaving out the most liked characters, like Scarlett, was a shame. Flint and Lady Jaye lacked personality, among the other new characters.

The 2nd film took away everything from the first, and was not fun.

I think both of them were pretty crappy, just for different reasons. The 1st movie ignored everything that made GI Joe interesting - the characters. The 2nd movie fixed this with Cobra Commander and not being afraid to be true to the design but ended up coming across as a very cheaply budgeted movie with pretty bland action. It was like something that Carolco would have made in the 80's, like Masters of the Universe.

They couldn't afford a full blown GI Joe vs Cobra movie so we are relegated to the Joes being off the grid , working without tech around LA.

I don't know when that perception faded, but it certainly has. It's odd, because I clearly remember the post release buzz being that it was better, but evidence suggests otherwise. Case in point; The RT score for Rise of Cobra is %35. Retaliation is %28. So even though the initial perception was that the sequel was better, critics disagreed from the start. Also, as of today, their IMDb scores are an identical 5.8, and it's been this way for a while now (at least since Retaliation was released on DVD as I recall). Retaliation did do substantially more box office globally (roughly $70 million more), but how much of that can be chalked up to ticket inflation and the fact that Retaliation was released in 3D?

From my own personal experience, I initially liked Retaliation better than Rise of Cobra, but after a second viewing I changed my mind. I now rate both a 5/10, with Retaliation making some successful improvements (Johnson for Tatum, ditching the international affiliation and making G.I. Joe American once again, stronger aesthetic ties to the original toy line/comic book/cartoon), but that overall it's less generic fun than Rise of Cobra.

Johnson wasn't an improvement, he's one of the main reason why Retalliation sucks.
This just was a bad sequel all around, can't figure out what the studio was thinking. This movie is funking horrible.

The first movie was awful.

This movie at least made an attempt to have a beginning, middle, and end... even if everything was rather ridiculous. (especially the last 15-20 minutes, which were just WTF!? level stupid)

One thing GI Joe 2 has over the 1st movie is that 3/4 of it aren't flashbacks. The editing for the 1st movie was god awful, Duke would catch a glimpse of a necklace or watch or something and would flash back, they should have just used the screen transitions from old soaps.
