significance of smoke plume?

I didn't understand the smoke plume as n result of the industrial fire. What significance did it carry in the movie if any?

St. Michael the Archangel

It is part of the mood of the film. It sets the context of the characters. The visual of it at the very end ties closely with the voice over narration. The point being that even if we are living through the end of the world, we can still make our relationships perfect and that our connection to each other is what really counts!

I think it had to do with how toxic the town was as well as how toxic the behavior and the attitudes of its people were. The kids were polluting themselves with whatever drugs they could find and being horrible to each other, like when they were throwing hot coins at that girl. It was pretty abysmal.

Maybe it tied into how the characters kept asking each other "How would the end of the world look to you?" Everything was "going up in smoke".

When you think of garbage, think of Hakim!
