What exactly did Caroline save Thurston from?

At the very end he's like, "you saved me." From what?

I took it as she saved him from himself. He was carrying the baggage of losing his friend and his dad walking out on his family. Thurston's way of coping with things was to experiment with drugs. I guess his relationship with Caroline was something good,new, exciting and worthwhile in his life that eased what he was going through. That's my take on it anyway.

This line "You saved me" annoyed me, it was so trite and rang false under the circumstances. We're supposed to believe that Thurston was magically cured of his depression and his need for drugs by having a girlfriend. Except of course when he slipped and did drugs at the party after their fight. But after that he was cured again.

She was just a catalyst that made him strong enough, not the "cure" because there is none. Of course it seems trite and rings false if you look at it your way. Try and think a bit deeper. There wasn't any magic in this movie, not really. This film's making sense than most do.
