I saw on the poster that Daydream Nation was a "funner, sunnier" Donnie Darko, could someone please explain the connecton?

That statement alone tells me the movie can't stand on its own merits. Donnie Darko was a one-off oddity masterpiece. This is a rookie level ripoff of many other films mashed up in one bland shake.
