Horrible Continuity.

This film has so many issues but I only want to mention the horrible continuity with the first, oringinal TCM. First, who the hell were those Duck Dynasty lookalikes who were members of Leatherface's family at the beginning? I thought their inclusion was bogus and somewhat normalized the most terrifying and twisted family in horror films. I guess the inclusion of a female family member was intregal to the plot though.

A more severe gripe of mine is the age of the lead female protagonist. She was supposed to have been born in 1973 but she looks no older than 25 in 2013! What the fuck...all because they wanted to show off a hot young actress? If it was really necessary not to make it interesting by having an older female lead in a horror film, they could have set the film in the 90's - which wouldn't have been too bad either.

Notice too that thanks to the judgement of having a young actress, they could never reveal that the oringinal events took place in 1973. That none of the tombstones could even have dates on them - a possible first in cinema history.

It's ridiculous - I would love to see a juicy documentary on this movie.

The filmmakers addressed this by saying the movie was supposed to take place in 1995 and not the modern day. Still, this makes very little sense, as vehicles way newer than 1995 can be seen all over the film, characters use smartphones to call for help, 2000's music plays on the radio, and more. I've also read that the creators wanted to cast someone younger for wider appeal and creative reasons, and "thought nobody would notice". My guess is the 1995 explanation is completely bogus and was never even thought of during production. It's hilarious that they'd assume nobody would notice basic mathematics. Even a young child could tell you a person born in 1973 wouldn't be 22 in 2013.

In a recent interview, Daddario stated that she was not aware of the timeline issue during filming. In addition, she thinks it was a marketing tactic as well as creative license. She also said it was the least of the movie's problems. Ironically, she still kind of likes it.

There's a million more questions I wish they'd ask her. It's not a good movie by any means, but it's such a fascinating train wreck.

You're seriously right. I love how they thought the movie would automatically be good just because they recreated the first movie in the intro. Like "we got the house spot on, so that means the story and writing don't matter!"

Yeah this also doesn't hold water because around the 26 minute mark as Daddario's character is going into the Carson/Sawyer cemetery on the property, the gravestone of Vera Sawyer Carson very clearly reads her date of death as September 29, 2012.
