CANON 7D

Lenses Lenses Lenses, the 7D body will be obsolete in a year or two, but a nice lens can last forever if you take care of it. The 7D with it's sensor is half the equation, if you use a bad lens the camera will never live up to it's potential. Get a nice set of Canon L-Series or Ziess primes.

Zoom H4n is a good recorder too.

The 7D is a great camera for Music Video, Commercial, and Independent short films, however it is not and incredible feature film camera. It has it's problems (moire, rolling shutter, heavy compression) but for the price it kills any camcorder in a similar price range.

Zoom h4n is perfect. It's actually a decent Mic in it's own right, but allows the capability to plug in a good boom and work strictly as a recorder.

A slightly cheaper option is zoom H2 or H1... You lose the ability to plug in a shotgun but you can still use it as a better option than the 7D's onboard mic.
