Saw this last night
I'd been wanting to see this movie for a while and had my hopes very high. Too high, as it turned out.
I don't know quite what I was expecting. The actual performances are all good, and Lena Dunham is indeed something special. She's fearless in her willingness to portray a character that's so hard to like. Jemima Kirke is gold. She's gorgeous and funny and her character really livens up a movie that occasionally becomes a bit humdrum. She's great.
Technically, there's nothing special about the film, but the fact that it was made so cheaply shows that Dunham also knows how to get things done. Clearly she is not Aura in terms of drive and determination.
The story is minimal. It's closer to being a character study than a narrative, really. I found myself wanting something a little more here. Aura is an interesting character, but not so interesting that I wanted to watch a feature-length character study of her. She's annoying, immature, and incredibly self-centered and self-absorbed. She has few redeeming qualities. I tend to prefer watching flawed characters, but I didn't find myself caring much what happened to Aura.
I wasn't blown away by the movie like I thought I might be based on what I'd heard. It wasn't as original or unique as I expected. I didn't really take anything away from it emotionally or intellectually. But I don't want to come across as disliking it because I focused on what was wrong. I enjoyed it. Just not as much as I expected to enjoy it.
