Comparison to 'Girls'

I've been a fan of HBO's 'Girls' for the past two seasons. Although people seem to be all over the place on their reviews of that show, it is refreshing to see good story telling about young, self absorbed, and entirely lost and delusional young people in New York. The characters are not likable in the least, but they are interesting people who many viewers can relate to on some level or the other (even if that 'relation' is with a certain degree of self loathing or remembering a time when we made those same moronic mistakes when we should have known better). Either way, Girls is an interesting and well written show.

Which is why I'm so confused by the fact that I absolutely hated this movie. The characters are basically the same, Dunham's and Kirke's characters on Girls and in this film only differ in their names. The general concept and theme of the show and the movie are the same - post college life of young 20 somethings is a pointless, meandering self-absorbed, entitled and terrifying time. Girls and Tiny Furniture are telling the same story with the same characters.

I think I like Girls but dislike Tiny Furniture for one simple reason: Tiny Furniture is boring. Really boring. Girls is interesting.

Girls is well paced, has interesting and witty dialogue, and it builds tension. You're left wondering why these characters do the things they do, and Dunham develops the characters by showing their backgrounds, fears, and influences. She keeps the show interesting. She fails to do that at all in Tiny Furniture... all she does is drag it on, Aura being a spoiled and self entitled pain in the ass, avoiding any degree of responsibility, treating people badly. She builds no tension, she tells no story, she leaves us wanting to forget she exists instead of asking 'why is she this way?'

Curious to hear thoughts of other people who are fans of Girls but who may not have liked this movie.

Cannot say I liked it, or even enjoyed it, but I was engaged throughout. Probably because I wanted to see the film that launched Lena Dunham...

I was struck by how much worse Charlotte and Aura are than Jessa and Hannah (not to mention Jed- an even bigger freeloader than Ray). I think Girls gives us time to see those characters from all kinds of angles, whereas Tiny Furniture is just a snapshot of them at their nastiest...

So yeah. An indie movie will almost always pale in comparison to an HBO show.

I, like you, am also a big fan of "Girls". I heard somewhere that "Tiny Furniture" is the reason that Judd Apatow was interested in working with Lena Dunham. So naturally being a "Girls" fan I was interested.
I was very very bored almost the entire time. I liked some of the scenes in which there was interaction with the mom and the sister which were somewhat unusual and interesting.
But I have to say that I am very disappointed. I was sure I would see something a bit different than "Girls" but in a good way. Almost all the characters were uninteresting to say the least. Especially Jed... I hated the scenes with him. But maybe it's the actor because I also don't like him as Ray.

I hope in the future I will get to see something a little different than a boring version of "Girls".
