Who am I Supposed to be Rooting for?

This film was obviously made by a competent hand, so I won't assume that my irritation for the main character is unintentional, but I still don't understand why I am supposed to care about her or anything that happens to her.

I'm with you on that one. Perhaps, we were meant to feel absolute irritation...and pity for a mother who lacks parenting skills and support to help her daughter more readily separate from perceived entitlement and a need to be coddled, while achieving independence.
