Loved it, but sucks that there were no sympathetic male characters

Maybe Lena Dunham doesn't know any? We do exist, even if few and far between...

I guess it's good for a change to leave men at the background, I'm a man and I liked it.

Oh, don't get me wrong--I thought it was brilliant.

It wasn't about that. It was about that... what was her name? - The leading girls inability to do anything. AND SO and also her inability to attract sympathetic men. A cumming of age. Well, just before that when you screw everything and anyone, up.

I'm better than you.

Sympathetic male characters are for other films.

considering that most, almost all films have sympathetic male characters (& that tend to play lead) i don't think its anything to get discouraged about.

I thought the chef was a neat character; I sympathised quite a lot with him. I wish we could have seen more of him.

I don't want realism. I want magic!

Are you serious? The "chef" was a loser douchebag.

I feel like adding a sympathetic male character would have made the film more cliche than it needed to be. Aura is a character who clearly wants love and attention, to the point that she even seeks it from unworthy a-holes, so if a sympathetic male showed up, the narrative would have been kind of forced to make her go after him and make him "the right guy" who she ends up with in the end. The fact that there is no "right guy" in this film (as there often isn't in real life, for a 22 year old woman who lacks confidence and doesn't really know what she wants) makes it more real and honest IMO.

I really want to be friends with all the dudes who liked this film or at least were open to liking it. It really is annoying how many guys have this knee jerk negative reaction to Dunham. I think she is a bit of an acquired taste but once you 'get her' you see that she is actually pretty interesting and hilarious.

Oddly enough, I remember reading during the first season (I think) that the middle-aged male was the show's top demo. Aha, found a cite: http://www.vulture.com/2012/06/more-boys-watch-girls-than-girls.html
