She decides she's (bored) in the marriage, doesn't communicate it to the husband, cheats on him, says she wants a divorce without trying to work on the marriage. She then spends the rest of the movie acting indignant, and it becomes the "job" of Steve Carell's character to "win" her back. The wife contributes nothing of positive value to this marriage the entire movie and she acts like she was the one who was wronged. Great performance by all actors all around, but this theme that the woman can literally cheat on her husband because she is "bored" and then arrogantly wait around while the husband busts his ass to win her back is bullshit.
I haven't seen this since it came out, but I do remember thinking something along those lines after watching it. I liked it okay, but it was too soap opera-ish.
I will not in anyway defend her actions and mistakes. Never never, not in a million years... that character made a bad choice. No question what so ever.
But....
I will say, life takes it twists and turns and when you are at the end of the rope (hanging death reference) in a relationship, sometimes you don't make the best choices. And this movie (MOST movies) are triggered off the characters bad decisions.
Personally, I've known many people, close and not so close, that have, shockingly, made this choice. When I asked a close friend why they replied that literally felt like they had died. They were dead, nothing else to give, get, feel, share... when your eminent (mental) destruction is staring you in the face, your fight and/or flight kicks in and this decision could be the result.
Seemed pretty realistic to me. She screwed up once - not repeatedly - he bailed (as he should), he forgave, he pursued. She's just confused, crying on the floor, waiting for him to fix it. It happens.
I understand that there are both sides to it, but she still fucked up, big time. Like, probably even moreso than her husband. Like OP said, all she had to do was communicate. Tell her husband that she was bored. She didn't have to cheat on him, and then tell him she wants a divorce, then act as if SHE was wronged when he went out and slept with other women, after SHE asked for the DIVORCE.
I understand, yes it is a complicated situation. But.. she should have at least shown more remorse for being the cunt she was.
I agree with you 1000%. That said, IN THIS MOVIE, this is the story they presented us with, the actions of these people and how they played out. Our judgement of fictional characters will never change the movie they live in.
And I stand by my thoughts above. Life throws fastball curves at people all the time and they fail to swing at them, being defeated. It's one of those things where the people IN the situation have ALWAYS said to themselves, "Oh, THAT would never happen to me, I would not react that way" and at that time, that is true. Right up until it no longer is true.
life aint always easy or simple.
Far as being a cunt.. well if you have had sex with more than 1 person EVER, you are a cunt too. As am I. :)
Yeah I was a little disappointed by that too. I thought the teacher would have had a bigger role in Carell's characters life but they just turned her into this crazy person. Decent movie but I think it could have been better in some parts. Oh well.
