Felt sad for Lisbeth at the end

Lisbeth is obviously a woman that has been abused and let down by the people that were supposed to protect her and as a defense mechanism, she became distant.

She cared about Mikael but her coldness made him believe that she wanted distance and wanted him only for sex. At the end, her manners backfired and she tried to show him appreciation, he had moved on.

Saw this last night. Yes, a very haunting ending. The lightness of hope and expectation is suddenly crushed by the leaden weight of disappointment and (temporary) despair. Lisabeth quickly reengages all her defenses once again.

"They haven't yet learned to think. They won't read. And they rarely listen. But they can see."

Couldn't agree more (brought me deep sadness to see the look on her face as she tossed the coat gift into the dumpster)! The relationship they shared certainly seemed odd on the surface but to see her evolve into a caring, affectionate person made that last scene a real heart breaker.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room!

reply

Yeah, she gave him the faintest smile in their last conversation. It worked with Miriam, but Mikael missed its meaning. Maybe saddest of all, Mikael hadn't really moved on. He was just out with his friend with benefits. But she would have had a huge emotional wall to climb in order to keep trying. It was very appropriate she was downhill from them in that scene, and that she rode off further down the hill.

I didn't feel sorry for her. he told her it was a bad idea to become involved and she knew his history with the other woman.

reply

Yah, I was so bummed how this ended. I felt really bad for her =(

reply

Yes, with all of the abuse she suffered when she was younger deeply affected her as an adult. She said that she was "insane", perhaps she was but she was also intellectually brilliant.

reply

It had to be like that in the canon of the trilogy. They probably wanted to have the option of doing the second (and third) book.

reply

don't believe that Mikael was turned off by her "coldness," he is just a shithead that can't commit to a relationship.
he ruined his own marriage cheating with the blonde who was also married this whole time.

anyone with a brain felt sad for lisbeth at the end, that's kinda the point
