Stupid ending spoiled an otherwise tense movie

It was very well acted and the little girl has a bright future in movies.

I enjoyed the film but I was disappointed with the ending. I wish they had come up with something more inventive. Sadly they decided on the 'obvious' ending. That lost the movie a couple of points in my view.

Just curious, did you read the book? I won't just post spoilers, but the movie, which was a pretty faithful adaptation, veers in a wildly different direction for the end

reply

Yes, I've heard the book has a similar ending but all the same I think the ending could be more realistic for the movie.

reply

I can PM you about it if you like

reply

I know how the book ends.

Someone else posted in this forum about the book ending, so that's my source.

I agree with the OP, the ending was weak.

The book ending was much stronger. In so many ways, actually!

reply

I agree that the ending was weak, and that was 100% on M. Night Shyamalan. It was his written ending. He's a hopeful guy and he likes to express optimism in his scary/thriller movies.

I think it was a wrong decision.

Actually, the book's ending could have conveyed hopefulness, just as well, but it's not as utilitarian and optimistic as M. Night's ending. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

^You make a fair point, but I would argue it's just as much on society and Hollywood itself. Give us an unhappy ending and so many get up in arms about it and can't handle it.

reply

That's true, people are generally angry about an unhopeful ending. Of course people will complain about ANYTHING but I can see for a general audience they wouldn't respond well to that.
