Maybe I'm missing some underlying message, but from I could see its essentially a black comedy poking fun at people with psychosis, which is about as funny as cancer.

This really isn't poking fun at people with mental illness. If you think that you missed the entire point of the film.
50/50 however was him poking fun at himself, and he had cancer.

shareIt wasn't even a comedy at all. If you'd actually WATCH it, you'd see it's actually a pretty good - and frightening - portrait of schizophrenia, and the dangers of allowing such a person to go on their own recognizance. (ie, they don't want to take their meds, and they don't want to get sent back to the hospital, so they lie through their teeth, and no one knows there's anything off about the person until it's too damn late for others.)
But as a social justice warrior, you probably won't like the conclusion.
Exactly what I thought. This is equal to making fun of any other kind of disability or longterm illness, be it autism or alzheimers. I haven't seen the movie only the trailer, so I can't really judge it yet and the context they put it in... but what I get from the movie is the above

Sometimes you need to inject a little humor into a sad situation. Now for me, the seriousness of schizophrenia and how he saw himself were actually an interesting look into the mind of a schizophrenic. It wasn't "taking the mickey" because it was his brain, hence his thoughts, no-one knew he was ill and lets face it the odd guy at the office gets talked about.
Alzheimer's is one of the worst illnesses in the world, and my grandfather had it, we watched him fade away, yet some of the things he said and did were hilarious. Life isn't a PC facade.
The movie did an excellent job of raising so many issues and portraying them to people who may not understand mental illness.
His desire to be 'good' yet inability to achieve it.
His 'normal' appearance to coworkers, despite his inner struggles.
The desire to stay off medication.
The overwhelming sense of inertia that mental illness carries.
I found the movie highly resonating.
The comical aspect simply makes the movie easier to watch, but for me in no way does it mask the issues.
It's a shame the acting by the cops was so bad. The leads all nailed it however.
