Was RFK's wife really that cool?

That's the best word I can come up with lol. Her character seemed to be the only realistic one and that's not a criticism on the actors. I know enough "fake" people to believe that the Kennedys may have been fairly accurately portrayed. They were, after all, extremely aware of perception's.

Peace in. Peace out.

Ethel was a tomboy so she loved being athletic and what not. Also, she supposedly worshiped Bobby and was a rock for him in addition to giving him 11 kids. I never got the impression that she was quite as cool as they portrayed her in this, but based on what is know about her it makes sense.

Thanks for the reply! I guess it helped her character that her husband was portrayed as a faithful guy lol.

Peace in. Peace out.

In one Bobby bio, they said that because Bobby was so far down the order of his siblings (7th out of 9) and his two older brothers were so strapping and what not that he was thought of as being the runt and felt a little like an outsider in his own family when he was growing up. He married Ethel pretty young and she gave him all that attention that he felt he missed as a kid.

Eleven children good God - I doubt she had time to be cool!

You don't think they hired an army of nannys, as well as other servants?

Other portrayals depict her as being a loud-mouthed, in-your-face, pushy type. I've ready many times that Jackie couldn't stand her.

As someone who personally knows her and her family, she was definitely opposite of Jackie. She grew up in a house of rowdy brothers and sisters who had there way around town...pulling pranks and getting into mischievious trouble. All that behavior rubbed off on her nephews and nieces. The times I have met her she was always very nice. She definitely had a more outgoing and active persona than Jackie, who was a reserved intellect.

I think she needed to be in order to remain sane. The Kennedy family is not an easy family to marry into and she needed to remind herself constantly of her family values and of how important it was to remain "perky" and "cool." I liked her portrayal, I think the actress did a great job.

I think the lady is still alive?

Ethel Kennedy is still alive. I just finished Andy Williams's autobiography. He had a fair amount to say about Mrs. Kennedy. It sounds as if she knew just how to act in public, dignified and friendly. The private Ethel was fun-loving and something of a prankster. I have just finished Part 1 of The Kennedys. So far, the portrayal of Ethel Kennedy is what I expected.

Yes this thread is three years old but I just started watching the show (now on episode 3) and I LOVE Ethel! "Cool" is such a perfect description. When her appearence on that interview was cancelled because Joe Sr. insisted Jackie does it, and Bobby said sorry to her during. Her response of "Meh, got my makeup done for free." so caught me off guard I fell off my chair because I was giggling so hard.

Everything she says or does is just... Winsome. I totally want her as First Lady - she'd have been so fabulous. SO FABULOUS.
