Why do people choose sides?

I have noticed that a lot of political discussion often comes down to Democrat v Republican, left v right, and each side shouts down the other.

Isn't it possible to rate a President on what they achieved, regardless of which side they were on.

Also, isn't it foolish to always be a Democrat voter or a Republican voter? Shouldn't you vote instead for whomever best provides for you, your family and the nation?

Please tell why you are completely on one side of the fence or the other, and can't you concide that your "side" gets some policies wrong and the other side gets some right.

So, if you are a Democrat, name me a Republican President you respect and admire, or a policy they brought in which you actually really liked and benefitted from. Also, which Democrat President was the worst, and which policy actually hurt you and your family by being brought in?

And to the Republican voters, the opposite I ask of you. Which Democrat President do you most admire, and which Democrat policy most benefitted you? Which Republican president did you least admire, and which policy from their side hurt you and your family the most?

Now, please be honest. Only answer the question appropriate to your political affiliation. I want to see if people can see both sides, and rate a President on his policy, and not just his political affiliation.

A lot of people here seem to act like they are totally one or the other, and never seem to give credit to anything the other side has done. So, this is your challenge. Please be honest.

It seems that both parties are so partisan today and middle ground is hard to find. Heck, Ronald Reagan couldn't be elected today. He was known for "reaching across the aisle" hence the Great Compromiser. The Tea Party and the far right could never support a candidate like that. I have voted for both Democrats and Republicans. I served in the military and George H.W. Bush was my Commander in Chief. We (both parties) label each other and attack and get so worked up about it while our elected leaders retire to the same exclusive clubs at the end of the day and bow down to special interests. I always respect the office of the President. I may not agree with all their decisions or policies, but we've been through wars, economic downturns, depressions, etc. We will be fine as a country despite what is being said today.
