Why did Jack knock on the bed during episode 3?

Was it the cliche 'knock on wood' before he calls the mistress and hopes he doesn't get caught? Was it to check to see if anyone could hear? This part confused me, it just seems out of place and not well explained.

If anyone could clarify this for me, it'd be appreciated.

"Knock on wood" is a term used for luck.
Example: "Hope I don't get caught cheating, knock on wood!"
And actually knocking on wood is a reinforcement of the statement.
