Nova's Clothes

Anyone else think Catelynn dresses Nova in a frumpy way? She's such a pretty little girl, but is always dressed in frumpy little tees & stretch pants (actually just like her mother). There are a gazillion cute outfits out there for little girls. I'm surprised Catelynn has resisted the temptation to over-indulge her little girl in this way.

reply

I think it's more practical for babies to be comfortable, such as wearing stretch pants. Especially if Nova is just at home. Also babies get their clothes dirty so what's the point in dressing them cute every day? Remember when Tyler and Nova went to visit cate at her treatment Nova was wearing a cute frilly pink dress but then later they took it off? I think Nova got it dirty so they had to take it off anyway.

reply

^ I agree with this. Plus, babies grow out of their clothes so fast anyway, why spend money on a bunch of frilly outfits at that age?

reply

I haven't spent much money on baby clothes. A lot of stuff I get is hand-me-downs from friends or I get stuff at Goodwill or Salvation Army or tag sales. I've found tons of cute things at thrift stores. If someone else wants to spend $20+ on a Baby Gap outfit that their kid wears once or twice, I'm happy to pick it up for 99cents or less at Goodwill after they're done with it.

reply

Yes! I love thrift stores. Babies grow so fast, most stuff is still in amazing condition.

I'm having a boy so I've been paying more attention to boys clothes and to what little boys wear. There isn't as much variety like with girls - I've always gone nuts buying things for my niece. I don't want my son to look sloppy all the time or only wear cartoon shirts like I see a lot of other boys wearing. I HATE clothes with cartoons on them but that's just me. I will dress him for as long as he is too young to have an opinion about it. He has cute collared shirts and little button-down shirts for special occasions or visiting with relatives. I obviously have more casual things for around the house and I know that babies make a mess and get dirty and throw up all over themselves. But I think babies and little kids can look clean and presentable in public..poor Nova is just in a diaper a lot. Like going for a walk in her stroller wearing only a diaper.

reply

Piggy, I bet you're dying to dress him like a little gangsta!

reply

No way! He's going to be a preppy little boy. And he'll be home-schooled and he won't be allowed to date. He'll be a mama's boy. But I need to relax or he'll end up like Norman Bates from Psycho and wear my dresses after I'm dead.

reply

The thing to worry about is if he wears your dresses while you're still alive.

lol..well that's true.

i do too. I don't get why they sell them anywhere outside of the kids sections.

reply

Ugh I hate seeing them on adult shirts. Although I don't have a problem buying a couple to make my 4 year old happy. They make great play clothes and I can save the cute stuff for him to wear to school. Win-win!

reply

I don't even know why anyone over 12 or 13 would wear them.

reply

i think there's a difference between dressing the little girl just plain frumpy vs dressing her in cute, comfortable, inexpensive, and casual clothing she can play in.

reply

When we are just at home I don't take the time to dress my daughter really frilly. She tends to run around in more "frumpy" clothing because she is messy. It's just easier to justify letting her make a mess in an old tshirt than dress her in a cute outfit and have to worry about her ruining it.

reply

I totally get that, but even then there are so many cute things for girls to wear. Comfy doesn't have to mean frumpy. If I had a daughter I think I would have gone hog wild buying stuff for her.

reply

I so wish I had the money to do that. I'd buy stuff for both my kids left and right. Even boy clothes are super cute! But both of them prefer to run around in their underwear / diaper all day anyways. It's next to impossible to keep them in clothes once we get home. So sadly it is kind of a waste.

reply

Blonde-angel, you know you can get tons of stuff from thrift shops, etc.? A lot of it is just stuff kids have outgrown & mom has no use for it anymore.

reply

Yes, I love thrift shops. I think I just responded to a post yesterday above about them in fact! But unfortunately we don't have the money to get a whole lot right now and even thrift clothes can get expensive when you're on a limited budget. If I'm going to pay 3 dollars for a shirt, I'd rather just go get a new one from walmart, or something off the clearance rack than a "brand name" one that is all stained / torn up ya know? Goodwill is the only one we have in this town and the ones around here are actually kind of pricey. My budget is more 25 / 50 cent garage sale clothes when I can find them, or hand me downs from my cousins with older kids who clearly like to be outside. That's why I try not to judge how another person dresses their child. Even though Cate and Ty have TM money that I obviously don't, maybe there's a different reason they dress Nova the way they do. You just never know.

I'm a huge thrifter and I do notice that different Goodwills have different prices. For example, my favorite Goodwill in a more "upscale" town prices all of their baby clothes up until 2T at 99 cents. Then if the item has the "sale color tag" for that week, i.e. everything with a blue tag, it's 50% off then you can get the item for 50 cents. But then other Goodwills have baby stuff for $3+ and I don't understand that! I don't buy it at those prices.

My latest find was a full snow suit, snow pants and matching coat, for 50 cents at a tag sale. He can wear it next winter when he's old enough to go out in the snow.

reply

I need to come shop at your goodwill stores! Around here the cheapest I can find is a 1.99 thin plain looking onesie. A dollar more and I can go to walmart and buy a thicker garanimals one brand new or even sometimes for the same price on sale. Ones around here aren't very affordable IMO.

reply

Yeah I'm lucky that I found that one particular Goodwill that prices the baby stuff at 99cents. They don't even care about the brand...Walmart, Baby Gap, Nordstrom, Carter's..it's all 99cents. They also don't care if the clothes are brand new with original store tags, still 99 cents.

Another tip, I'm not sure if your local Goodwills do this, or if you have a Target near you..but once a week (here in CT I believe it's on Wednesdays) Target drops off anything that hasn't sold in the stores or overstock, or returns, and Goodwill sells them for really cheap. They bring in everything, clothes, shoes, accessories, small electronics and appliances, furniture, etc. You can get good deals on brand new things.

reply

No offense but as you say "if you had a daughter", so how can you judge how someone else dresses their child. You dress your child sometimes to be comfortable, also when you are home what does it matter what they wear. You realize how much kids grow, not everyone can afford to buy the best clothes. I cant believe this is actually a point of discussion, just goes to show how judgmental people are that we have to discuss what a one year old wears!!

reply

Over-sensitive much?

reply

No not all, why are you?

reply

As the mom of three girls, I've found it easy to find cute and comfortable clothes. In the summer, nothing is easier, cooler, or cuter than little sundresses. There are darling overalls for winter weather. Sometimes I wish my girls were still little so I could shop for baby clothes!

reply

Me too! Little girls are so fun to dress up. Carter's makes really cute clothes with soft cotton. My girls are 10 and 13 now, not as much fun to dress!

I do wish they would brush Nova's hair occasionally. She always looks like she stuck her finger in an electrical socket.

reply

They are very fun to dress up. When you have the money to do so. As for her hair, it looks a lot like my daughters hair. I could spend 20 minutes brushing it and drying it so it sits all pretty but as soon as we step outside if it's the least bit humid it curls back up and looks like I don't know how to use a brush on it. It is sad to see how many people judge these kids on how they look when they have no idea on the reason why.

reply

she could have used the 3500 on her daughtee and not le pig.
