Catelynn's depression....

Why does it seem like Catelynn is always "depressed" when work needs to get done? In an earlier episode, her voiceover said "I should be helping on the new house but I don't feel like myself" and it shows Tyler hard at work and Cate is lying in bed. Last week, Tyler is meeting a contractor to work on the house when Cate has another panic attack and has to go sit on the rocks and smoke. In this episode, Tyler is walking around the house picking up Nova's toys and getting ready for Butch's party and Catelynn is just lying on the couch. I don't doubt she's going through a depression, but it seems like every time work needs to get done, she has a "panic attack" or "just can't get out of bed". But if she has fun plans, like meeting a friend or Maci's wedding, she can get up for that. It's not all depression. She's just being lazy....Get off the couch and do something!! I just wish someone would call her out on it. I won't blame Tyler for getting fed up and leaving

I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. However, now that I'm starting to get caught up on this season, I'm leaning towards some of this is laziness. Especially, after she said that she wanted to get the opinion from the medical doctor (the appointment she missed). So, she hasn't had a diagnosis from an M.D. just PHDs. This is a little concerning. Also, if she knows she has trouble getting up in the morning, why schedule your appointment before noon??? She said she wanted to see a real doctor even though she already knew what her diagnosis was. And who prescribed her scripts if she hasn't seen a doctor?

Bottom line, I'm having a very hard time with her using ''mental illnesses''. I think it's insulting to people who really have mental illnesses, like Farrah. Although, I can't hold a grudge against anyone who insults Farrah, I can only applaud them. So, she was a bad example but you know what I mean.

I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt too. I always really liked her and rooted for her, but after last week, I was just done. That appointment was the only thing she had to do that week probably and she probably stayed up all night, overslept, and missed it. And had the nerve to say to Tyler, "well I'm sorry I'm not like you for getting up when the alarm goes off" as if she's blaming him. I'm a very heavy sleeper and I'm the same way with my alarm, but you know what I do? I set my alarm (or 2 or 3 alarms) for earlier than when I need to get up, so I'm actually up when I need to be. But that logic is just over Cate's head.

reply

im not a morning person either. I sleep till noon and stay up all night. But if I have something to do in the morning I get up, get dressed, brush my teeth, hair, eat & go where I'm suppose to go in the morning. Ill hit snooze like 5 or 6 times before getting up but I always set my alarm 1 - 1 1/2 hours before I have to leave because I know I'll lay in bed for a half hour before getting up.

I also use the snooze button and several times at that. However, I set my alarm clock to go off WAY before I need to be up so I'm up when I need to be.
I also wouldn't make my appt that early but if it was the only time they had, I would make sure I went to bed early so I wouldn't be late.

I think she can hide laziness with the excuse that it's all due to depression. She has some depression I'm sure but I think now she uses it to get away with more.

I agree with everything you said. You nailed it.

did she say she waited 6 months to get that appointment... I'm sure she could have waited an extra few days to get a later appointment.

but....
WHAT MENTAL PHYSICIAN MAKES SOMEONE WAIT 6 MONTHS FOR AN APPOINTMENT????

"Hello, I'm depressed and have anxiety and I'm basically sit on a couch all day."
"we have an appointment open in 8 months"

????? really ????

reply

To top it all off, she said Dr. Drew was the one to pick the doctor. In essence, she let him down as well. Not that I hold him in high standards but still, she slapped him in the face as well.

I wonder what all is going on that we aren't privy too. You would think if it was really serious that 6 months is too long to wait.

She didn't have to wait 6 months. She said that's what it usually takes. It probably takes that long because he's one of the few within the area or he's got lots and lots of patients, and maybe travels for his job.

I wasn't listening fully to her. I though she said SHE waited 6 months for this appointment. Thanks for clearing that up.....
However... if she said it usually takes 6 months to get an appointment isn't that a little strange?? How do you make someone who is suffering from mental imbalance 6 months?

reply

I don't know why it would take 6 months. My only guess is that he's one of the few within their area with his job type.

I wouldn't be surprised if Catelynn has simply gotten the antidepressants from a nurse practioner or physician's assistant. So the not seeing a doctor yet may be true. I doubt she has seen a Ph.D beyond the treatment center. That Kathleen definitely doesn't have a doctorate, and she is a disgrace to others in her profession.

I also wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it's looking sketchy. Catelynn got out of treatment so glad she didn't have a diagnosis of panic disorder. My guess is the panic attacks are secondary to the depression, and none of that is a joke. But she speaks about the panic as if it's really what interferes with her life. It was absent for two months after treatment, and she still wasn't taking freakin' responsibility. Some is not in her control, but what actually is, we don't see her do anything productive.

It was just too much for me when she missed her appointment for no reason at all and then admitted how she tried to manipulate the office into letting her in late. I lost all respect for her. It's like she's determined to punish Tyler forever for making her give up Carly and it's awful to watch the destruction she's bringing to her family over it.

I also find it too convenient how she's just fine to go to Comic Con or Maci's wedding, or the Sao concert but as soon as it comes to going to school, working on the house, taking care of her kid, getting a job, or working out she turns into a depressed slug.

reply

What happened with that appointment was the tipping point for me too. Here, it was very important to see a specialist in medicine, and Catelynn blows it. She blames it on the alarm clock, and twice (that we saw) talked about rushing there as if it negates being 18-19 minutes late! As if the office let her down because she thinks she should have been given the final forty minutes of an hour slot. Oh Catelynn, Catelynn. It's not like an hour appointment means you can pop in whenever in that time. Not how it works, cookie. It's your fault and your fault only. Also to use crying to try to get in or say things like, "I'm a *beep* loser"... it's all manipulation. She's doing that a lot when it comes to her problem with laziness.

What is particularly sketchy to me is her ability to have get-up-and-go for the fun stuff, but depression and anxiety kick in when it's time to do something productive. Even when it kicked in while in the pool at her mom's house, her remedy was to bolt with her friend, to do the "more fun thing" of smoking weed. To see her friend sparking up in the car, and Cate was seen with a cig in her mouth--I had it. I'm certain she sat on those rocks to join her friend in using drugs.

Part of what is her control is to stop smoking weed (unless she is addicted, but then she needs to admit it), and part of what is in her control is to make it to important doctor's visits on time. Pawning her daughter of on her mother and not getting off the couch or out of bed when it's time to do some work are all too much for me.

I'm sorry but Catelynn is the epitome of someone who is lazy who just happens to have thousands of dollars in the bank. She's bored out of her mind and that's the problem. She doesn't even take care of her child. She's just so lazy it's ridiculous. If losing Carly is the catalyst then she needs to accept that this is the problem and fix it because laying on the couch all day isn't going to help. She probably feels like she was pressured into giving up the baby on 16 and Pregnant by Tyler (because he and the rest of the people participating in this didn't have a clue that they would be going into their mid twenties and still be filming). She most likely feels guilty because guess what? She has thousands of dollars to not only care for Nova but Carly. She buys houses and she's not happy. She buys cars and she's not happy. She's married to the same boy she's been with since 7th grade and she's not happy. She's gotten pregnant and had another healthy beautiful baby and she's not happy. She's earning a paycheck while laying on her back on the couch and she's not happy.

It's pretty obvious what the issues are. Lack of ambition and Carly because even if she kept Carly, she probably would still be hanging around doing nothing because that's just her personality. I don't ever see her talking about business endeavors or taking up a hobby. She loves to pig out and smoke. She turned into her mother. Classic case of I don't want to end up like my mother but too late I already did.

"I never hear you speak and when you do you apologize for saving me?"

reply

I'm so glad I see someone else say Catelynn has turned into her mother. I said it last week in a thread. Everything else you said... totally 100% spot on.

reply

Wow. So refreshing to hear the truth. I agree with you one hundred percent. Spot on!

reply

Spot on. Totally agree.

reply

I think the reason why she's unhappy now is because she's rich. There's a huge difference in her personality now compared to season 1.

reply

She pissed me off when she told Tyler she was late for her appointment and she said she tried to make them feel sorry for her by crying and saying "I can never do anything right." Just like she did to Tyler when he called her on her sh!+ when Kathleen (the therapist) gave him the okay to do so. She started crying and said "my mental illness ruins everything." tsk tsk tsk. Is she playing Tyler too? I wish he would have called her out on it.

reply

Yup. I used to like Cate a lot but not so much anymore. It's obvious that it's just pure laziness with her. When it's something she wants to do, she's fine. When it's something she doesn't want to do, she's too depressed and having a panic attack. It's getting ridiculous and I don't buy it anymore.
