Distractingly Terrible Editing
I actually enjoyed this film far better than I expected, but I couldn't stand the editing. I edit for a living in "Hollywood" (yes, for a competitor's studio, I'll admit, but I truly love Sony) but even non-editors can see how bad this editing is, right? What I mean is that, did you notice cuts? Like, something seems to have jumped? Aside from nitpicky "breaking the 180 rule" things and jump cuts, there are continuity jumps all over the place. You go from a twoshot of Anison with her hands up, pointing to Sandler then to a medium shot with her hands down (without lowering them). It's not just once in a while, it's one after another, super sloppy.
I'm sorry if this sounds picky but editing is a thankless job because when it's done well, nobody notices your work... but if you're bad at your job, people notice, and this editing is so bad that I'm assuming non-editors also noticed? These fixes are SO easy that more AEs could edit a film better. If someone's arms are up in a two shot, you either wait until they lower them, then cut... or, if you messes with the timing, you get a reaction shot of someone else (to hide the continuity jump) and then back to Aniston with her arms down... and nobody notices.
++ edit, I was just listening to the director's commentary (which is a great listen, btw) and at the 1:39:00 mark he actually talks about the editor... it's hilarious because apparently the editor was telling him (Dennis Dugan) how "great" of an editor he is, etc., mentioning the montage at the end... sorry, but Dugan and Sandler picked the music (which was great) and the montage was just long clips with 48 frame dissolves. I mean, c'mon dude, an editor's first job is to be objective.
