Anachronism!!

Ok, I'm not 100% positive, but I think that when it's 1994 in the movie, Sturgess says to his mother that he's gonna attend the premiere of "Jurassic Park", and Hathaway with the other guy exit a cinema playing "Army of Darkness". Both movies were released worldwide in 1993 (from Universal, by the way, I don't know if it matters for the copyright). It's very difficult for me to believe that the filmmakers didn't do proper research to see when these movies came out. Also, IMDB doesn't have it in the "goofs" section (it has other anachronisms), so...was it 1993 or 1994 this part of the movie?

I still haven't seen the movie (won't premiere until mid October here) but in the book at least the references to Jurassic Park and "Evil Dead III" (=Army of Darkness) take place in 1993.

Could've been released in other areas a little later than in the U.S.

I don't know about in the UK, but in the states we have theaters that play movies that are 6 months to a year old at discounted rates.

We went to a special showing of Jurassic Park in July 1994 during my college orientation.

A lot of movies described as (for instance) "1993" didn't actually hit UK screens (or possibly even US screens) till 1994.

The Cabin In The Woods, for example, is described as "2011". Maybe it's when production starts.

No, it's when the movie is released or premiered in the country it was made. "Avatar's" year is 2009, because it was released at the end of 2009, but do you know when production start? 2005. And the actual shooting FINISHED in December 2007. And then it was post production. So, no.

And "Cabin in the Woods" was premiered in the USA in December 2011, at an Austin film festival.

If you watch the DVD with the director's commentary, she comments on Jurassic Park, saying that they knew it was not the correct year it actually came out. It was a mistake, but intentional. They chose that movie because it was one of the bigger movie releases around that time and viewers might recognise that more than another title.

I've not read the book in a little while, but I'm pretty sure that 1993 is the year he parties really hard and then goes to see his mother, but in the movie they split this into 2yrs so it's 1994 when he sees his mother. The book did it right when mentioning the Jurassic Park premiere, but the movie didn't.
